So I'm standing at an intersection of a low fence that comes this way with the high fence that goes this way. As you can see, the high fence is done in black. The low fence is galvanized. Sometimes this can be an interior fence in a property, or maybe it's what we call a neighbor tie-in. So this property owner has the high fence, and this is a neighbor. Their fences have been tied for a long time, and we come and put a new fence in on the high fence side. We'll do what we call a neighbor tire. In this case, we have a four-foot galvanized gate that is four feet high and 16 feet wide. 16 feet of width is great for most implements. There are a few that are wider than that, but this works for the majority. It's hinged with adjustable hinges, and we use a unique latch that's self-closing. The latch also opens from either direction. Neighbor Tie in Fence for Ranches

This is a 1348-3 high tensile, fixed-knot fence mesh. It's a great choice for a number of applications. It's a very robust fence. It's got smaller holes at the bottom that graduate to larger holes at the top, more dense at the bottom, where smaller predators or varmints might try to come through the fence. In this application, we have also a hot-wire that runs along the bottom so that if an animal or predator did try to dig under, they get a nice shock and it teaches them not to come back. So the fence is great for sheep, goats. It's good around a yard where you might have domestic dogs in a large yard. It's also good to keep wild dogs out. It's also used as a horse fence. The openings are small enough that horses can't get their hooves through it, If you have pawing horses. On this fence we've also got an extra barbed wire at the top. It's about five inches above the top of the 48. So it gives a little bit more deterrence to climbing or jumping. On this installation, we also have some rock at the bottom. That's because we have some drainage that comes through that ends up at the pond you see behind me. That's just to promote the ground staying in place, but to let the water flow through. The fixed knot on this fence in conjunction with the high-tensile wire, which is incredibly strong. Give a very robust fence that lasts for many years. Learn about fixed-know fences for goats and sheep. The 1348 mesh pattern is a great mesh pattern for a number of different applications. It's great for sheep. For goats. For the sheep and goats it's good because there are small openings that prevent predators from coming in. In this application, we even have an electric wire that runs here at the bottom so that if a predator did come in to try to dig underneath the fence then the predator gets shocked here. Additionally, goats that have horns can't stick their heads through. Sometimes goats on a larger mesh opening can stick their heads through. Their horns get stuck, and they can't get out. So this is a good selection for goats with horns. This also works well for yards, bigger yards for domestic dogs. Works well to keep wild dogs out as well. So this being a tight mesh also functions good for horses. Where the horses, if they're pawing, that they don't get their hooves into the mesh. At about 4 to 5 inches above this mesh, which is 48 inches tall, we put another strand of barbed wire. This is optional, but this gives a little extra height to the fence. Also, is some deterrents from climbing or jumping. Once again, 1348-3. The 13 is for the 13 horizontal wires. The 48 stands for the height. The overall height of this fence, which is 48 inches. And the last digit, which is a three, is the spacing vertically. These are called vertical stay wires. So stay wires are on three-inch centers and each one of those is affixed to the horizontal wires with the fixed knot, which is extremely durable, strong. This fence is an incredibly strong fence, lots of material. This is a 16 foot wide gate, for low ranch fence that we use. It's constructed of an inch and 7/8 diameter, three galvanized steel tubing. Everything is welded for a very strong gate. On top of that is a layer of four-inch by four-inch steel mesh. This is welded wire mesh, six gauge. This mesh opening size works great for sheep, cattle, hogs, wildlife. Very versatile ranch gate mesh. The gate is hinged on some simple adjustable hinges and then latched here with a two way latch that allows opening from either direction and self-closing. Considering fencing around your rural home? Learn about fixed-knot fences for your country home. This high-tensile wire mesh fence is a 1348-2. There are 13 horizontals. It's 48 inches tall, and the two means that the vertical stay wires are two inches apart. This is a two-inch by four-inch mesh. Commonly referred to as a horse fence. It's a non-climb design so that horses' hooves can't go through it. They just basically peel off of it. 48 inches here. Another, let's say 5 to 6 inches up we have a barbed wire in this application. That extra height is for deterrent of climbing or jumping, so it works well. You just leave the tee post a little bit higher and are able to add that to it, and as you can see, this particular fence also has a wire that is a hot wire that's run on outriggers that come off of the mesh fence to deter any varmints or predators from digging under the fence. Typically, coyotes that would dig under the fence and try to come in and play with my good friend Daniel. Fixed-Knot Fence Around a Country Home

Learn the basics of high-game fence material such as fixed-knot fencing, fence patterns, support bracing, and more. This is a high-game fence that happens to be black. The black is done in the process when it's galvanized. So it's through and through into the finish. It's eight feet tall and referred to as 2096-6. The 20 means that there are 20 horizontal wires. The 96 means it is 96 inches tall overall and the six means that there is a six-inch spacing between the vertical stay wires. This is a high tensile mesh. These cramps are done in the mesh and those are forming a spring action that's constantly pulling to keep the mesh taught. This mesh is joined at every intersection with a fixed knot. It's a very, very strong way of attaching the intersections. We do have a strand of barbed wire at the top. Is about five inches above the top. That's to deter climbing and jumping. Talking about the black fence, a lot of people opt for this because, you know, the color black absorbs light and doesn't reflect light. And so unlike galvanization, which is typical for a fence like this. That reflects all of the light, this fence absorbs it. And you may be able to see looking back when you have a cover behind you, this fence kind of goes away so it doesn't stand out as much. And that's appealing to some people. It does come at an extra cost, because of the wires. The T posts and pipe posts are powder coated. It's also a very long-lasting finish. We have an installation that was done more than 20 years ago and we've gone to take a look at the powder coat, the T post, and the wire and it's a remarkably good shape for 20 years of aging anyway. One more thing to point out. You can see behind us where hogs have been rooting up the ground and obviously the fence was a good barrier for them. 100%. This fence keeps hogs out. The Basics of High Game Fence Material

Discover the best material for high-game fences. For a high-game fence like the one here, which is eight feet tall to the top wire, the way to go for material selection is a fixed knot fence. That's what this is; these unions between the vertical stay wire and the horizontal wires are put together with a fixed knot. It doesn't allow the vertical wire to slide sideways. What does this do for us? It forms a web that becomes very strong. Each of these wires, and by the way, on this eight-foot tall fence, there are twenty horizontal wires. Each of these wires has a breaking strength of just under 1300 pounds. So extremely strong. As you'll see, in high-tensile mesh wire fences, the wire is high tensile and doesn't elongate very much, maybe one or 2% compared to a low tensile fence that might elongate five to 10% over time. With the addition of these V-crimps inside, the horizontal line wires give it a stretch or spring effect. And so, when the wire is installed properly, it's tied at one end and stretched to the other end. And these V-Crimps form a spring action that keeps it tight. During hot and cold weather, steel contracts and expands the spring action of these V-Crimps, keeping the high tensile wire very tight over time. Over many years, it does the same thing; it keeps it tight. So, the distinct advantages here are the fixed knot and robust connection. As well as the V-Crimp, the wires themselves are solid as it's high tensile. And this wire is coated with a class three galvanization older wire. Field fences, things that were used and are still used today, have class one galvanization. For many of them the galvanization on this wire is three times as much, and last three times as long, depending on the climate that you're installing this in. This can last 25, 40, to 50 years. So it's an excellent choice for the best high-game fence material. Best High Game Fence Material - Fixed Knot Fencing

The high-game fence comes in a few different fixed-knot patterns. 2096-3-200, 2096-6-330, and 2096-12-330. The standard fixed-knot fence pattern is with the vertical stay wires on six-inch centers. So we've got six inches here in between. Other options are that these are on 12-inch centers, but it leaves some pretty big gaps. The other option is that these are on three-inch centers and so it's much tighter. The typical perimeter fence is six inches on center here. And then at the bottom, you can see that the horizontal wires are tighter at the top. They're not as dense. So this discourages animals from crossing at the bottom. The spacing here is three inches. Then it goes to four inches. Goes to five inches here. Six at the top. Seven inches. So this makes there some economy-saving horizontal wires at the top, still doing its job to keep larger animals from jumping over right above the top wire, which is right at eight feet. We install one strand of barbed wire to the barbed wire, which discourages jumping. Sometimes if a limb falls on it, it just hits the barbed wire and bounces off. The barbed wire itself is very strong. It's high tensile as well. As you can see here, the fence is galvanized. A tee post or galvanized barbed wire is galvanized. A high fence is composed of many different components, not the least of which is the structural components that hold the wire in place, that support the high rates of tension of the wire itself, and the absolute best material for that, in our opinion, is galvanized steel pipe. This is high strength pipe. It's extremely strong. It's extremely long-lasting. The galvanization matches esthetically with the color of the fence. But more important than that, the zinc protects this from rusting. Many times the point of rust is right at the ground. And that's also the same point that has the most leverage on it. Learn about support bracing for high-game fences. Here we're looking at it on an H brace. An H brace is two longer pipes driven on the ground. And then in this case, has a that we call a kicker. This is a dead man and a diagonal kicker. So when the fence is tied on here and stretching back this way, the kicker is working to hold it in place here. The kicker actually does quite a bit of the work. And this structure works together to give a very strong anchoring point for all the fence that's going that way. We put about three …well, yeah, probably 3,000 pounds, two to 3,000 pounds of tension on this wire. We're using two, ton and a half winches when we do it. We get it to a thickness just by pressing on it. But this is I can tell it is very tight. And so this structure has to withstand a lot. The post here is driven five and a half to six feet on the ground minimum, if the ground is softer, will continue to drive until we hit the hard ground.
